Could Massage Be Timely For Staff At Risk of OOS?

Over the last twenty years work has certainly changed. Not only has technology made great leaps, so too, as a result, has the way we do our jobs. While many work changes have been positive, some have had a big impact on our bodies. The human body is designed to move. However, more and more of our work is sedentary and involves a great deal of sitting, staring at a PC screen, along with email interruptions that can have the annoying ability to disrupt one's most concentrated thought processes. The human body has had to find new ways to adjust to this more sedentary yet faster paced work style and that in its self can be a challenge!! New technologies including computers, lap-tops, mobiles and black-berries, have brought with them new challenges for our physical and mental well-being. While hard to measure, each year OOS related costs to business are considerable and include the following: ACC levies, sick pay, lost production time, loss of skills and experience, modification of workplaces, reduction of output and staff replacement costs (OSH 1991). In this article I discuss the OOS conditions staff are at risk of and the benefits of massage as a therapeutic treatment. On reading this article you may discover that the promotion of massage (both on and off-site) might be timely for at least some of your staff..........
